Are You Truly Prepared for Life After Graduation?
The question that surely occurs to many graduated students or to those who still have to graduate is the same. You will have to ask yourself sooner or later if you are truly prepared for life after graduation. While trying to answer directly to this question, an alarming sign in our head will scream a big no, unless you are sure and confident enough to respond to this question with a soothing yes. It’s always difficult to be prepared for the next step, for something which still has to occur, but not impossible. You are probably wondering how? In the next lines, you will find the answers.
Job Hunting
The most important skill to have if you want to pursue a desired career is the ability to hunt for a job. That is what surely lies ahead, you just have to learn how to be a job hunter. After you have learnt to wait for the knowledge to come and absorb yourself, now you are ready to use that knowledge as a weapon in achieving your goals and get the desired position. The worst thing ever is not knowing what to do, not having a dream job at all. Moreover, most of what we learn, do not help us find an adequate job. Students are taught to have a job and opportunities after graduation, they are however not taught to seek for it. Even if you happen to be a good job hunter, that is no guarantee to get one. What you are and what you can be is often misinterpreted, and all what counts is your CV and your motivation letter. That’s why you have to commit yourself to writing them, you can’t write the perfect resume in just a few minutes and then send it to hundred companies. It’s much better to customize them as much as you can and only then apply for the desired position. In order to find the perfect job you can use search engines like Indeed or business-oriented social networks like LinkedIn.
A Matter of Experience
To make things even harder, the degree is often not enough for some companies, due to the fact that they want you to have experience, which makes your graduation meaningless at some point. How can one have experience if there is no one willing to give him a possibility to gain it? That is an absurdity that tends to occur nearly to all young students looking for a job. One can be good and a quick learner, proving himself to be a great worker, even much better than the one who has all the required experience and education in that field, but only if given the chance… And that chance seems never to occur. Finding a job, writing CVs, motivation letters and applications solely depends on students, but if they will be taken for a job, that depends from other people. They may be often mistaken at interviews, because interviews actually make it harder. It would be better to directly test the candidates doing the job to see if they will fit, but it is not up to students to decide.
A Different Job
All these troubles bring in the confusion and the feeling of disorientation. Not being supported and not living anymore in the world of education’s justice, leads to a strong disappointment on the way to find the suitable job. That feeling will follow shortly after various attempts to get a job. In addition to that, the right job that corresponds to your education will not matter anymore. The only thing that seems to matter is to have a good life standard and a job that in some way satisfies you. Sometimes a job not related to education may surprisingly fulfil students’ expectations, as they may be willing to try taking some different directions from those they were taking so far.
Have You Already Found a Job?
To make it even worse, people start asking the most undesired questions, like “what are you going to do now after graduation?” or “have you already found a job?”. Once they started asking questions about your occupation, they will do it all the time, as of a matter of speaking there is nothing else they can ask you and that is so as to say worth asking. Time passes by and the same question repeats itself, but the hope for a better future after graduation still lingers, strong or weak. The day may come when least expected, but still who knows?
A Bit of Luck, Motivation and Courage
The time comes to the awareness that one has to face the real world, in which merit, hard work and books do not count anymore, but it comes down to a bit of luck. No matter what, we should never give up, because the strong motivation and stubborn determination are our only friends. Should you touch the bottom of desperation, it is probably the time to reset your goals and prioritize them. Once the goals are set and seen from different angles, the action needs to be taken. Once, twice, hundred or thousand times more till its final achievement. It is also important to mention that these goals should be realistic ones, it is nice to have dreams, but be careful about planning to realise them. It may take a lot more courage to actually achieve something and most likely all starts with the awareness that young graduates should be open to different kind of jobs and that they may find themselves unprepared to work something they did not study for. Fortunately, everything can be learnt, because the man is in fact born to learn till the rest of his life. It may often result in getting a much better job than the one we studied for, if all conditions are satisfying. The graduation taken is not the guarantee to pursue a career in that area, it could be, but it is not always the case.
Make the Most of a Student Life
In conclusion, others have been through before and there will be others later, but while still graduating try to make the most of a student life as happy as you could and do not worry about the future. It would be wise to use all the benefits that a student life can offer and to take your chances. Should the student not be prepared for life after the graduation, it is needless to say that there will be enough time to get prepared and to improve life after graduation as well, because it is just another adventure. Worrying about the future is useless, because what the future will bring, will happen whether we want it or not. What we can do, is to try with all our might.
