So, you haven’t had enough schooling for a lifetime, yet? It’s okay! You’re in good company! When considering graduate school, it is important to take the time to weigh your options against your long-term goals. Here we look at a few questions to ask yourself before deciding to take on a few more years of late nights and study groups.

1. What are my goals?
Do you have specific plans for the future? Maybe you want to be a doctor or a lawyer, but what about all of those other professions. Have you explored all of your options? Have you taken the time to research what other graduates have done with the same major you are working towards? These are important things to consider before taking the plunge and applying to graduate school.

2. How will this degree help me achieve those goals?
Think about this: graduate school is expensive and time-consuming, which is totally worth it if the reward at the end of the journey is that you get closer to achieving your career aspirations. However, not all career paths require a graduate degree. Again, it is important to consider all of your options and decide if graduate school is a necessity for your career path.

3. Am I ready to take on another 3–4 years of school?
Similar to your years as an undergraduate, your time in graduate school will be taxing, likely even more taxing than your last four years of school. The rewards for taking on this monumental endeavor can be amazing; however, these rewards come at a high cost. Make sure you are ready to re-commit and put in the effort it will take to achieve your goals!
