The Bridge that Ms. Scritchfield Built….

The Bridge that Ms. Scritchfield Built….

I was in ninth grade (nearly 30 years ago) when a teacher changed my life by building a bridge to a Road less traveled. The Year: 1981 ¶ The School: Central Jr. High School ¶ The Location: Chambersburg, PA ¶ The Teacher: Ms. Scritchfield, 9th grade English Teacher ¶ The Story: One day Ms. Scritchfield opened up the class by telling us that over the next few weeks we would be studying poetry. I do not remember anyone jumping for joy after this announcement, but I do remember what followed this initial proclamation.

The Powerful Power of Repetition

The Powerful Power of Repetition

When I was first learning Spanish, there was one hack that accelerated my progress more than anything: Every morning, while eating…breakfast, I would watch the first 20 minutes of Y tu Mamá También. ¶ You’ve heard about people learning languages by watching movies, but, until you’re at a level where you actually understand a great deal of what’s going on, that makes one’s progress slow. ¶ By repeating the same 20 minute section over and over, bit by bit, I was able to eventually understand all of the 20 minutes. ¶ It’s en vogue to proclaim that there’s no point in memorizing anything because…Internet.

I’ve Officially Started Calling Myself A Writer

I’ve Officially Started Calling Myself A Writer

So why am I so terrified?!I had to fill out paperwork for my son’s newest doctor, and it asked for the parents to list their job. I wrote in “Roofer” for my husband, but for the first time I wrote “Writer” as my job. Normally I put Homemaker as my job, but since the beginning of the year that hasn’t been entirely true. While I am very much a mother, and making our home function is one of my main jobs, it’s not the one I work at with a passion.

I definitely dont want to promote myself here but some of my thoughts on this topic and more specifically how dribbble plays a role in it…mastery. It seems that we tie a lot of our worth, nowadays, to this idea that we haven’t arrived at the top unless we have people validating our arrival. Basically people telling us that we’ve made it. ¶ I definitely dont want to promote myself here but some of my thoughts on this topic and more specifically how dribbble plays a role in it (in my personal career) are below. I only post this because I struggle with this very topic as well and feel that this content relates in a small way.

Why Do We Fall, Master Wayne? The Necessity Of Early Failure For Future Success

Why Do We Fall, Master Wayne? The Necessity Of Early Failure For Future Success

It’s eighth grade, and the first major assessment of the semester in literature is approaching. Having not met many obstacles to my success…in previous academic years, I thought this year would be the same as any other: I would be able to coast by on minimal effort and receive high grades; I thought I was invincible. I learned the hard way such thoughts were not even close to being true. I failed that test. I learned that day that, through my failure, that I wanted to succeed academically in the years to come, I would need effort and a work ethic that I had not needed before.

On Girlhood: Formative

On Girlhood: Formative

Trigger warning for references to eating disorders and sexual assault.I started my sophomore year of college at age nineteen — the only one in my family to make it that far. At nineteen, I got a C in biology class and a classmate told me that girls generally don’t do as well in STEM classes. I was nineteen when I changed my major to English. At nineteen, I was selected to write for the college newspaper. I was nineteen when the editor of the newspaper tried to kiss me at a party.

The Millennial Manifesto

The Millennial Manifesto

Wanted: A generation of technologically gifted, open-minded idealists willing to step up and change a world that is in desperate need of…changing. That’s right, Millennials, I am talking to you. Your forebears were only smart enough to fuck up this world. You must be smart enough to un-fuck it. ¶ The quality of a generation is demonstrated by its collective response to the seminal problem of its time. The Greatest Generation, for example, shall forever be remembered for freeing the world from the grip of fascism. The generations that followed, Baby Boomers and Gen X, did little more than stumble through the problems of our day.

As I sit in the ER for panic attacks, let’s talk about what I learned about my business in Q1

I didn’t want to write a Q1 review, mostly because they are incredibly boring and self congratulatory.Yet, here I am in the emergency room, trying to figure out if I just had a panic attack or a heart attack, and all I can think about is how I got here. ¶ I’m a relentlessly negative human being, but for the first time ever in my life I feel like I understand my company and how to make it work. ¶ I actually thought I was in a pretty good mood, for me at least. Clearly not. ¶ I was repressing something bad.

Finding the balance between reason and imagination.

Finding the balance between reason and imagination.

Remember when you were a kid, and you had all these great ideas in your head? Flying cars, vacations to the moon, personal jet packs. The…sky wasn't the limit- anything you could conceivably imagine felt like only a few scientific achievements away. That is, until you grew up, or got told off by a slightly more older, and more responsible and reasonable person. Flying cars are horribly inefficient, moon missions had only happened a few times and only happened when the most technologically advantaged nation on earth put all their political and military manpower behind it, and jet packs just plain don’t work- they would just burn…
