Lesson learned from 3 Small business Internships (1)
Introduction
Now I work at IBM Korea, one of global enterprises and feel totally wired when I remind myself of my working experience at small businesses.
The fact is I had worked at small business like rising-up NGO, venture start-up, etc.
To tell the conclusion first, this article doesn’t advocate small business with an unrealistic positive myth. I just want to give you a real helpful, funny guide if you consider to work at small business as first career or jump shift from big company to small business.

Join Small business
1. It just happens that I enter small company while I intended to get job offer from a big enterprise
→ You should prepare for hustle and bustle. A number of hardship, trouble, and suffering are waiting for you. Life is a struggle between Birth and Death.
2. I’ve just joined in SMB(Small business), but, honestly don’t want to stay at this company
→ Nothing comes from just “hope”. At first you should do your duty as one employee of one company and develop your career path, keeping your skill up personally.
3. I get in agile SMB which changes the world, not dumb enterprise.
→ That is the most fabulous point and the essential reason for me working at small business. Every organization has pros and cons and it’s a quite fortunate for you if the specialty of small business fits with your style.
The thing is, it’s natural that the other members might not share the vision of company which is enormously important for you. I want you not to be disappointed and have a soft relationship with your colleagues, even if they don’t have a positive image of small company. That would be the best way for you to grow up.
4. Now I prepare the job interview for small business but don’t know how to. (Normally SMB is not able to have a lot of PR about their ideal concept for recruitment)
→ Even interviewers know the name value of company matters (especially in Korea), while that small business is as valuable as their child — however small the company is.
You don’t need to arouse the fake passion. What you should do is to speak up your stories honestly like why you want that position, who you are, which value is important for you. I’m personally sure that would work, aside from immediate pass or fail.
5. Now I’m working at big enterprise but sick of it. I just want to work with fun, and creative start-ups.
→ If you say anything about this, your friends/parents/acquaintances tell you like this;
- Yes correct, Your life is only once so do what you love!
- Are you insane? you must suffer out of this safe, big, well-paid company!
- It’s fine to do anything you want only in condition that your house is rich, you have 5-years or more working experience, or you have a lease on your home (PC to Sangwook park)
…
The most important thing you consider is that; how you feel with this issue. I want to say that you should undertake the responsibility of the result from your choice, whatever you choose, stay at enterprise or jump shift. Also you need to consider deeply whether you “really” can do that.
