While I never met him, my grandfather has always been an inspiration to me. In the 60s he was big in the civil rights reform movement and the migrant workers movement, and he even marched with Cesar Chavez. I only know a little bit about all the work he did, mostly through picture and stories, but it’s been instilled in me through my family that we are never going to be able to be our best selves if we are in communities that have a lot of social injustices. Growing up in Flint, and seeing the impact of the water crisis, I’ve seen how a Republican administration can be with these major cuts to communities. The water crisis is a really, really complex issue, but at the root of it it’s from not taking the community’s concerns as valid. I feel that the Democratic party is going to be better at fixing this problem in the future.
