How do we know if students have learned a particular topic? What is authentic learning?

Determining if students have grasped a particular topic is a crucial aspect of education. Authentic learning is an approach that promotes long-term retention of knowledge by providing students with opportunities to apply their skills and knowledge to real-world situations. In Concordia International School Shanghai’s Honors Precalculus class, students were tasked with the polar equation project, which exemplifies authentic learning in action.

The project required students to reproduce a picture of a real-life object of their choice using polar equations, an exercise that demanded their understanding of polar coordinates. The practical application of math skills in this project allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of the subject. They carefully calculated and graphed to create stunning images that closely resembled the original photograph, some even perfectly. Additionally, the project included a self-check component where students superimposed their mathematically created object onto their chosen item, allowing them to refine their understanding and identify errors. The technical skills required for the project also helped students to develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

This project is an excellent example of authentic learning because it connected math concepts to real-world situations, making it both meaningful and relevant to the students. By engaging in such a task, students learned to take ownership of their learning and refine their understanding of the material. They also developed skills that are transferable to other areas of their lives. The polar equation project is an excellent model for how authentic learning can enhance a student’s learning experience.
