UX Writing Case Study “Webtoon” Content Language Change Tips
Hello it’s me “Dinda”.
I made a bit change, from now on I’ll use English on my Case Study hehe, but feel free to give respond on any language.
So today I want to discuss a topic about microcopy tips how to change content language in Webtoon.
I use English webtoon content so that the tips discussed and this article have the same language.
So let’s start the topic discussion.
Role: Junior UI/UX Designer that looking for a job
Timeline: 2 day
Background
- Application Name: Webtoon

Screen Target
“Content Language” Screen
This screen appears when the user wants to change the language of the Webtoon content, because each language has different content.
Emotional Condition
When I want to change the language, I always make sure that the Coins I have bought are not lost.

Microcopy Analysis
From this original microcopy, in my opinion, the sentences are too wasteful and convoluted just to explain to the user that the Coins that the user has will not be lost if they change the language of the content. And for the confirmation question whether the user is sure to change the language of the content or not, I don’t think it’s really necessary considering Thai and Indonesian there are no confirmation questions.
First Proposal
Revision Point:
“If you change the content language, Coins you buy in this language will not be lost but cannot be used in other languages”.
Tone:
Informative
Reasoning:
Generalization for all languages, because for tips in English content there is the word “coins will be here if the user switch to back English”, while tips in Indonesian content only use certain language words without mentioning what language the user is using, from there I make a copy to generalization all languages, so that users are not confused every time they change the language they have to find a different copy even though the meaning is the same.
Alternate Proposal
Revision Point:
“Coins you have in this language will not appear in other languages”.
Tone:
Informative and to the point
Reasoning:
The use of the word “will not appear” to explain that the Coins is not lost, it is simply not visible (thesaurus.com) according to the antonym of “disappear”. And the sentence already implies that without the appearance of Coins in other languages, in other words Coins cannot be used other than in the language in which user bought Coins.
Conclusion
From the two microcopy proposals that I propose, I hope that Webtoon can simplify the microcopy of the Content Language Tips, so that users who read don’t need much time to digest the meaning of these tips and can instantly change the language in peace knowing their Coins will not be lost.
