Thoughts:
«This is Jonathan Larson’s story…. before…». Before what? Before time runs out, in the most unexpected way and at the less appropriate moment. The film begins with these words, based on the highly autobiographical theatrical musical of the same name that narrates the turbulence of the young Jonathan Larson, a penniless waiter who dreams of life as a composer in the ruthless New York.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first directional debut brings him to the screen. Miranda pays homage and gives credit to that Larson who in the end became an artist, in the broadest sense of the term, who died prematurely at the age of only thirty-five after having written, directed and completely set music before on tick, tick… BOOM! and then what came, posthumously, considered his masterpiece, RENT. Later came two Tony Awards (the Oscars of the theater), and even a Pulitzer Prize for Dramaturgy.
tick, tick… BOOM! is a profound story of dream and reality, of talent and heart. The director enters on tiptoes, with devotion and respect, into the life and work of Jonathan Larson, bringing some of the closest friends and historical interpreters of the musical RENT to participate in the film. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Andrew Garfield have created a wonderful world, immersing themselves and immersing the viewer in the days of someone who has done everything for music. Andrew Garfield’s performance is truly magnificent.
