Skills to Learn Before Starting Preschool

When we talk about lessons for young children, the first thing that strikes our mind is potty training. You are right! But that’s not the only skill your kid may need to know before joining the preschool.

Every parent want their children to have a robust start in life, and Daycare or preschool provides a solid foundation for a successful future in school. If you are stressed that your child might not be ready for starting a preschool, stay calm because there are several ways to prepare your toddlers for their preschool entry.

  • Make them independent — We all learn from our mistakes. Similar is the case with children. Don’t rush to rescue your child in every challenging situation; allow them to learn by doing. Every parent should encourage their child to be independent with basic self-care skills like nose wiping, zipping and unzipping school bag, hand washing, covering mouth while coughing or sneezing etc. You can help them if needed, but let them initiate these activities, let them try.
  • Teach them to stay organized — You can do this by teaching them to keep their belongings in the room at the right place. You can use colourful bags or baskets and ask them to collect their toys, clothes and similar materials and keep it together. After a play session, let them clean up their room. You may help them if needed, but do it passively, let them take the charge of the entire activity.
  • Develop Social Skills — Make your child socially fit by teaching them etiquettes like caring, sharing, playing with peers, participating in activities etc. In the school your child will develop these skills by playing along with other children and taking part in activities organized by preschool. But at home, start teaching manners so that your child is ready on the day one of the school. Remember, you are your child’s first teacher. Teach them to say sorry, thank you, excuse me and following directions etc.

While the above items are not limited to just organization and independency, you at least need to teach the above few things to your child for a better start.
Other things child should know before preschool includes:

1. Teach your child their basic information — name, street name and phone number

2. Introduce new words and expressions to your child to improve their vocabulary

3. Tag their emotions, let them understand why are they behaving in a particular way in a particular situation
