Studying Star Wars

Today in class we watched George Lucus’s first film THX 1138, which was about a dystopian society. There were a lot of similarities to Star Wars that I recognized right off the bat. The first similarity was that all the people wore white uniforms like the Stormtroopers. I also recognized a similar sound in THX 1138 that sounded like the Lightsaber noise. I think it was when the robot officers were zapping THX. The robot officers when they were being built also resembled C3PO.

Some differences that I noticed between the two was that THX 1138 had a simple plot and script. Barely any of the characters talked, they mainly used their actions to express emotion. In Star Wars the main characters talk a lot and the plot isn’t necessarily simple.

We also listened to the music that inspired the Star Wars soundtrack creator John Williams. I could definitely hear the aspects that John “stole”. We also looked through a couple of books that contained Ralph McQuarrie’s artwork. I really like how Lucus’s idea became less crazy as a result of McQuarrie’s artwork. We also watched a trailer on The Star Wars, which was super interesting how the creators used McQuarrie’s artwork as inspiration.

Star Wars Rebels Cartoon

I really enjoyed the Star Wars Rebel cartoon on Disney XD. It was very colorful and actually pretty funny. I think I even chuckled out loud a couple of times. I like that this cartoon is meant to be in between the third movie and Rogue One, because it fills in an important piece of the Star Wars cannon. I saw that Ezra, like Jyn was reluctant to help at first because they had been so used to caring about only themselves in order to survive. Highly suggest this show if your looking for a fun watch.

Other News

Disney is finalizing the agreement to acquire 21st Century Fox. From an accounting perspective, which is my major, this should be very interesting. There will probably be a lot of goodwill included on Disney’s balance sheet come the next reporting period. Goodwill is an intangible asset that is equal to the purchase price of a segment minus the actual cost of the segment on 21st Century’s books.
