1.Build Your GPA Early!

It’s important that you use your early classes as a buffer to offset the harder courses to come. Try your best to do your best in courses that others take for granted. For freshman level courses, never settle for less than an A. It may seem excessive but trust us when we say your GPA will thank you later! This advice applies particularly to core classes such as Texas Government and English 101.

2. Thinking Out Loud: Cognitive Manifestation

Studies have shown that voicing your thoughts can help significantly with memorization. Voice what you’ve learned, what you’re working on, or what you need to work on. When in doubt, speak it out. It may sound a little crazy, but it works! To avoid weird looks, try doing this when you have some space to yourself instead of in the middle of a packed library.

3. Treat Yo Self: Setting Small Benchmarks

Offer yourself small incentives to read that tough paragraph or summarize that chapter. The human brain is fascinating in its persistence… when presented with regular motivation! From gummy bears to ice cream, the possibilities are endless. Use your neurological risk-reward system to your advantage, maximizing efficiency and powering through with small treats and incentives. For those with diabetes, alternatives include kettle cooked potato chips and French fries.

4. Walk it Out: Exercise and Retention

Research conducted by Dr. Chuck Hillman of the University of Illinois says that about 20 minutes of exercise before an exam can improve academic performance. While this research may apply to a variety of workouts, walking stands out in simplicity and accessibility right before the test. Walking for twenty minutes has been shown to increase blood flow to the brain, so that doesn’t hurt either. Use science to your advantage and walk it out!

5. Study Bites: Gum and Studying

When done properly, a method as simple as chewing gum can help jog memory. Pick a flavor with a strong scent to chew while studying. On the day of the exam, chew the same kind of gum. The difference in retention may only be a few percentage points. But that cognitive push may well be just what you needed to go from a B to an A!

6. Aligning your Chakras: Meditation before the Examination

Meditation is one of the most highly underrated methods of stress relief out there. When done correctly, half an hour of mindfulness meditation can work wonders for your stress levels. It’s an indispensable tool for anyone wondering how to focus during finals week. It’s also an effective mechanism for keeping stress levels in check.
