Naked guitarists, coke cheaper than water, boneless chicken wings with a side of traditional wings as lunch. Yeah buddy, I’m most definitely in the USA.

The last couple of days have been really hectic. I’m one of the 15 students in our study trip, traveling with 4 cars from LA to San Francisco. I thought the study trip would be about doing some sightseeing, reading a couple of articles and visiting some companies. I guess I should have seen all this craziness coming instead. We have been driving and running from one place to another, trying to catch a glimpse of everything we want to see here in California. Each morning we pack our group to the cars and decide a check-points and a final destination for the day.

The study trip route

As a short recap about our trip so far, we arrived to the LAX airport on Thursday and went sightseeing in Los Angeles on Friday. The Hollywood walk of fame, Griffith Park, and Downtown LA were definitely a great way to get to know the USA. Oh right, panicking on the highway during rush hour was fun as well.

Yeah, didn’t have time to take pictures during rush hour. Stock photos are cool enough.

On Saturday we drove from LA to Santa Barbara. Luckily we had a local acquaintance showing us around, so we spent the evening doing wine tasting and eating well. On Sunday we drove to Monterey through Big Sur and other cool places. We also visited the University of California in Santa Barbara. The campus seemed big and nice, but definitely not as cozy as Otaniemi.

Don’t worry, we’ll definitely post tons of pictures of the trip at some point.

Lake Casitas was drier than our Saturday evening :(

One of the nicest things about this trip is that we can actually get some credits by doing a group assignment. We’ll be reading 10 articles and writing an essay reflecting about how these theories are seen in reality. I just finished reading the articles so the practical part comes next. In the upcoming days we’ll be visiting many interesting tech companies in the San Francisco area. I’ve already lost my sleep during the last couple of days over all the things I want to learn and see there.

Duckface at the beach

To summarize, our trip to California has been great so far. Visiting the USA for the first time and getting a tan is not a bad way to earn some credits.

If you’re a student reading this: don’t miss the study trip next year.
