Driving from Santa Barbara to Monterey was a breathtaking experience, and the views were only becoming better as we went forward. On Sunday the plan was to visit the Elephant Seals Rookery and Big Sur National Park as we drove up the coast, and we knew that our schedule was tight. Along the road, there were way too many spots where we wanted to stop to admire the beauty of Californian nature and take pictures. Soon we realized that the sun would have set already by the time we reached Big Sur, so we had to skip it. Nevertheless, on Monday we went around 15 kilometers back south to Point Lobos Natural Reserve.

Fantastic scenery along the way

Elephant Seals Rookery

Piedras Blancas Elephant Seals Rookery is a beautiful place where you can see cute elephant seals take sunbaths, flip sand and sneeze. We were lucky to observe many of them chilling on the beach, and we absolutely fell in love with the funny marine creatures.

Point Lobos

Instead of going back to Big Sur on Monday, we decided to visit Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, which is located closer to Monterey. After the Sunday drive along the coast, I felt like I could not see anything that would supersede the beauty of the coastline we drove by. Little did I know what we would find in Point Lobos. We hiked for a couple of hours in the reserve and could not believe our eyes at the sheer beauty of cliffs, ocean and forest. We were beware of the ticks and poison oak found in the reserve, but luckily none of us were seriously affected by them.

On the road

We spent a lot of time in the cars during our trip, and especially while being stuck in traffic jams. Our awesome squad did not plan on getting bored, so we entertained ourselves on the way. Some of the cars transformed into Karaoke taxis, and others were filled with bold jokes and funny moments. Incidents included weird noises coming from our cars, and encounters with local road rage in the form of middle fingers.

Fun times in the car

More stories about our adventures in Monterey, San Jose and San Francisco will be coming soon, so stay tuned!
