It’s September 1, 1985. Ronald Reagan is in the White House. And Back to the Future — the first Back to the Future — is the summer blockbuster.

And that’s the day I go back to in the pilot episode of Stuff Dot Life, a podcast about our things. And trust me, it’s not an entirely sentimental journey.

In this first episode, I lay out the premise of my new podcast. It’s about decluttering — and acquisition. What we collect, what we hold dear, what we’d try to save if the floodwaters were rising, and conversely, how hard it is to toss it all out. And of course it’s about all the stories our objects would tell if they could only talk.

This episode features Warren Levinson, Frank Polefka, and Amy Selwyn (at the end). Music by Noah Levinson. Recorded at Montclair State University.
