What happens when you come across a vintage edition of “Fun with Dick and Jane” in an out-of-the-way bookshop? And you look inside and realize that it’s Dick, Jane and Sally’s grandparents’ farm that instilled in you a love of the countryside?

If you’re me, you buy it.

And then you spend the next week second-guessing yourself and asking your friends to help explore the book’s text and subtext. Does nostalgia for Dick, Jane and Sally mean you’re buying into Donald Trump’s vision of a formerly great America?

All of us — even good progressives — try to recreate that old-fashioned ideal of the polite and happy family, when it comes to holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. But what, and who, does Extreme Normalcy World — the world of Dick, Jane and Sally — leave out?

With Noel C. Nowicki, Amy Selwyn, Warren Levinson, and Ayla and Amir Avdicevic. Music from Stefano Vita, Shake That Little Foot and the Andrew Sisters.
