Dawn Scott, last year’s Get Busy Living Survivor Award Winner, receiving the award

I am incredibly honored to be the recipient of the 2016 Get Busy Living Award. It seems like only yesterday I was standing before my Stupid Cancer family, listening to the beautiful words of my husband’s nomination, trying to take in the moment and seal it in my memory forever.

On days when I feel down or overwhelmed, I pull out that memory and remind myself that I can push through anything, overcome most any obstacle.

To me, the award symbolizes grit, determination and focus — a reminder that I will not give up on myself. Yet, it also symbolizes the love and dedication of family and friends who are with me when the chips are down and encourage me always to rise above challenges.

I would not be where I am in life without that balance of yin and yang. Cancer may take its toll on our bodies, scramble our emotions and sidetrack our dreams, yet it also binds us together, joining us as family and strengthening our resolve to come together in support and love.

The GBL Award reminds me daily that I do not forge ahead alone, rather, I forge ahead side by side with those who will not let this disease define them. Rather, we define ourselves and I’m in damn fine company. Thank you, Stupid Cancer.
