Recap: Stutern leadership and work ethic session

stutern is a startup in Nigeria that aims to help students find internship opportunities, and also help students and fresh graduates gain necessary skills to improve their chances of employment and fitting into the workplace. Stutern released a detailed report on the unemployment situation in Nigeria, the report has been highly referenced by a lot of people, but more importantly shows the commitment of Stutern in challenging the unemployment problem.

Stutern in line with their vision and mission organized a session on 10th June for job seekers and fresh graduates in the workplace to learn and understand the importance of leadership and good work ethic in career building.

Leadership and work ethic

Registration for the session cost 1500 naira, three speakers were slated for the event, Amaka Okwuashi Head HR at Jobberman, Ikeoluwapo Adebowale VP people engagement at Konga and Gbenga Totoyi associate partner at The African Talent Company (TATC), all young pace setters in the growing Nigerian tech industry.

Ikeoluwapo Adebowale kicked off proceedings at promptly 12pm with a series of exercises and activities that quickly warmed the gathering, she spoke eloquently about the importance of self-awareness, self-confidence and “discovering what you do best”, according to her, leadership starts from self before extension to others, she also spoke about good followership, empathy and maximizing strength over weakness.

Amaka Okwuashi deftly took over and emphasized the adoption of the right attitude towards work, she regaled the participants with real world scenarios and how embodiment of the right character would attract the right type of attention, she spoke about integrity, sincerity and hard work as the bedrock of a good leader and the keys to positive career growth.

Finally, Gbenga Totoyi rounded off the session by stressing the importance of mental strength, fortitude and determination in the work place, he told participants not to expect the work place to be a cuddly environment, and to exhibit strength and focus to achieve goals irrespective of challenges faced, he encouraged participants to seek active mentorship.

The session was far from over as participants showed instant absorption of the lectures and asked spirited questions that inspired dialogue, the moderator Moyo Sodipe seamlessly directed the flow, at this time it was past 2pm the supposed official closing of the session but everyone was thoroughly engaged in the program, at past 3pm participants were persuaded to go for light refreshments, at this point organizers and participants engaged in one on one conversations.

The Stutern team put together a remarkable event, they were on hand to deftly make sure the event was hitch free and showed the spirit of positivity that has pushed the growth of the tech industry in Nigeria.
