Mixing prints can be so much fun, but also challenging if you don’t know where to begin. Once you have the basics down, mixing prints is a great way to spice up your wardrobe. We put together some helpful tips on how to mix prints and patterns well without looking like you got dressed in the dark.

1.Remember that stripes go with everything.

Stop viewing stripes as a pattern and treat them as a solid. This will open up your wardrobe to endless possibilities.

2. Try mixing in patterns with layers and accessories.

If you want to start mixing prints but are slightly hesitant, layers and accessories are a great place to begin. If at any point you feel the outfit just isn’t working for you, you have the option of removing the layers and accessories.

3. Mix a big print with a smaller print.

Let one print be the dominant and the other the accent. This way the two prints aren’t visually competing but rather complementing each other.

4. Pull from the same color family.

By wearing an outfit that is one color or different shades of the same color it is bound to match no matter what the print. If you aren’t going monochromatic, pick an accent color that each print shares to tie them all together.

5. Go all over black and white.

This is similar to sharing the same color family. By sticking with just black and white, you can mix whichever prints you desire.

6. Break it up with a solid

A solid element can break up the patterns so that the look isn’t too heavy on the eye. In this case, the sequins are the second print.

7. Texture can be considered a print.

Even though your textured piece may be a solid color, it can still be considered a print. When mixed with another print, it can add an element of visual interest to an outfit.

While mixing patterns and prints can seem intimidating at first, it’s really fun once you get the hang of it! Fashion is all about taking risks and finding joy through what you’re wearing. So go out, be bold, and have fun!
