INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY!

RISE UP !

--

What if Rosa Parks didn’t sit down? What if Harriet Turban didn’t risk her entire being each and every single time she went to a mission to free other slaves? It would have been much easier to enjoy her freedom and move on but she yearned for more. She pursued more for the society even if it killed her. Her words “I grew up like a neglected weed — ignorant of liberty , having no experience of it” ….

Words that made her when she tasted freedom want every other slave to know how it felt like.

Ann Atwater never had books to tell her what was just or legal but she did advocate for black rights through her loud , demanding and assertive personality. She understood the vitality of unity in the Black community and emphasized for that through grass root organisations.

The theme for International Women’s Day this year, “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change”, puts innovation by women and girls, for women and girls, at the heart of efforts to achieve gender equality. International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

Yvonne Chaka Chaka — also known as the Princess of Africa did as much with her talent of music as the late Wangari Maathai did with her knowledge and sole intention to protect forestry in Kenya.

“Let’s make sure women and girls can shape the policies, services and infrastructure that impact all our lives. And let’s support women and girls who are breaking down barriers to create a better world for everyone.”

— UN Secretary-General, António Guterres.

The 2019 theme think equal, build smart, innovate for change focuses on innovative ways in which we can advance the empowerment of women, particularly in the areas of social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure.

It is time for women to Rise Up .

Rise up to the occasion like those who have gone before. They did not have the technology , books or people who had survived the ordeal yet they dared to defy the odds. They did not have a manuscript but they created one and showed us how to navigate through. Their footprints indelible and scarred in our souls , they made today possible for women.

From entertainment to the corporate sphere , women are making strides . They are changing the society and giving more women inspiration , motivation and the fuel to defy the odds and show the world how much more they are capable of.

In this time and season when , fraternities are out to enlighten , empower , motivate and protect women , it is time everyone is encouraged to rise up to the occasion. This includes men too. We need more men understanding how their role is imperative to making this a reality.

The world of humanity is possessed of two wings , the male and the female. So long as these two wings are not equivalent in strength , the bird will not fly.

Today, the UN Women and the UN agency have organized celebrations to take place at the UN Headquarters in New York dedicated to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. The event shall be graced with women from the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and design, senior officials of the Organisation and various personalities committed to the advancement of women’s rights.

Parting shot….

Women are worth it!Women are capable!

Happy International Women’s Day to every woman!
