CLIMATE CHANGE

WE NOW SEE THE AFTERMATH!

There is an important announcement at the end of this post so read to the end.

The spell is here again, dry spell to be precise. This time however, the perennial pangs have mastered their way, and they can easily maneuver faster than before biting everything entirely and harder from plants, to animals and not sparing even human beings.

With the Meteorological Department and National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) tasked to provide early warnings to protect Kenyans from adverse impacts of hazards and disasters the outcome is still the same. We lag behind in all aspects relating to disaster mitigation, prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.

The current heat is unbearable!

We are in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi County, earlier referred as the place of cool waters but the way the ultra-violet rays are hitting, the sobriquet(read alias/nickname)no longer befits the city. The solar reaches every corner of the town. Trees have become so scarce and the ozone so thin.

Hunger, famine and starvation smashes our headlines once again with majority of the population in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) being the worst hit. Turkana, Baringo Garissa ,Tana River just to mention a few are facing the pangs of hunger harder with the need of immediate intervention by the government.

Maybe we thought devolving the system of governance would help in providing local solutions to local problems but the challenges persist. Same problems year in, year out.

The devastating effects of climate change are real and its far reaching consequences affecting vital sectors of human livelihood including water resources, health and food security. Global warming aftermaths are felt to the core while precipitation has become so unpredictable and irregular.

With greenhouse gases hitting a record high in 2018 with no hope of maintaining temperatures below two degrees Celsius according to the United Nations Environment Programme, the situation is expected to worsen the ravages of climate change.

Do we still remember the global laureate Wangari Maathai? She could never have fathomed seeing the environment and the country she passionately championed for turn into a barren land with few trees and its inhabitants appealing for relief every year. It’s such a pity! We have failed her as a nation!

The window for action is narrowing and thus the need to speed everything from rapid and aggressive technology switching to the international negotiation and agreement of far tougher emission reduction of carbon targets to suit the world growing demand for energy.
