Vulindlela! Youth Leaders of Today

Day 1 recap of #SAIMUNZA19

By Andrew Ngunjiri

“VULINDLELA! Youth leaders of today”. This is the guiding theme to the first ever SAIMUN conference held in South Africa, Johannesburg hosted at Nova Pioneer, Ormonde. Delegates from Kenya and South Africa streamed into the venue gracefully clad in their official apparels. Enthusiasm was evident in the air as delegates interacted with one another. Shortly after the registration process, the delegates were ushered into the hall to grace the opening ceremony. Daniella Olouch the Secretary-General, heartily welcomed the delegates and urged them to confidently voice their ideas that would ultimately aid the world in becoming a better place.

The delegates were ready to kick start the debate albeit they had to get the proper training to get in touch with the rules and procedures of MUN. Spearheading the session was Emmanuel Obam, head of committees. He touched base on the essentials of any successful debate and the formalities to it. The delegates proved up to the task by doing by consistently asking questions and jotting down notes.

All in all the training session was very interactive. The day concluded with an electric mock debate session that addressed the hypothetical contentious issue that all persons in the world above sixteen years of age should be married. Outgoing delegates ceased the opportunity to voice their opinions. Clearly, they exuded every aspect of the youth leaders we need in our society.
