WHY SAIMUN?

HERE’S WHY

(Article by Sophie Opondo)

2019 is still fresh with only about 528 hours in. It’s that time when our resolutions are still intact and we are still hopeful that we have time to follow through that which we had sent our minds to.

In the spirit of moving different this year, is there a better way than being the change you want. Being the change in your community, among your friends, your area and the world!

We live in a global village and what is good for the geese is equally good for the gander. Social media has made it easy for us to be part of the important conversations. It has enabled us to communicate, influence, speak out about the ills in our societies and call out those in authority when they are slacking.

SAIMUN however allows me and you to have a seat at the table. To intellectually engage and meet other like- minded individuals, all over planet earth; share, aspire, inspire and wear our work boots moving forward. Attending SAIMUN is one of those things that need to be penciled in early.

The SAIMUN experience never dies. As the youth, the future of tomorrow, SAIMUN gives us the voice to our future, it gives us a platform to actually walk the talk and see how far we can go.

This year’s theme, “Youth Leadership at its Peak: the role of the youth in sustainable development” is a clear indicator that our voices matter. That our presence has been recognized, we are what matters, we are tomorrow, and we can build this global village if we come together and reinforce the fact that we are the workforce that revolutionizes the globe.

We have the potential and most importantly we can be part of the change that we want to see, this is why SAIMUN 2019 is a conference you cannot miss. The table has been set before us the challenge is “are we as the youth ready to take up the challenge and be the leaders that we need to be? , be the leaders that shape our nations for the next leaders after us ?”

The same hours the Late Nelson Mandela, the late Kofi Annan, Former First Lady Michelle Obama and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar have in a day are the same hours me and you have, the difference is how we use it. Let us make each hour in 2019 count. As the clock ticks , let us be youth influencers who shake up the world and raise the stakes for our successors. That is what true icons do. See you at the conference!

Sub Saharan International Model United Nations (SAIMUN) is a five-day international relations simulation for both high school and university/college students that is held annually at the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) Gigiri. The international meeting is attended by more than 800 students from all over the world, in which they debate the major issues of the international political agenda. SAIMUN19 now beckons all of us to once again take part. The theme is “Youth Leadership at its Peak:The role of the Youth In Sustainable Development” It will be held from 8th -12th July 2019, so make sure your calendars are marked!

SAIMUN also strives to offer an all-rounded journalism experience to the media team through simulating different media: a newspaper —
The Daily SAIMUNER, a video news channel on YouTube — SAIMUN News, this blog along with various social media platforms. To get all this and more, subscribe to our mailing list below.
