Polkadot: First 05 years of development
2022 marked a crucial and celebration-worthy milestone for the Polkadot and Kusama Network Ecosystem: the first 5 years of development. From 2018 to 2022, let’s dive into the major achievements and progress to see how far we have gone.
1/ On the core level, the number of active developers who made at least 1 commit in 30 days rose steadily to over 200 by the end of 2022. Code commits remained highly consistent.

2/ Zooming in to the Substrate’s Github repo points to a similarly consistent pattern from 2018 to 2022. The top 5 contributors are @bkchr Gavin Wood @shawntabrizi #thiolliere @tomaka17.
3/ On PolkadotGithub repo, top 5 contributors include @rphmeier, Gavin Wood, #ordian, @bkchr, @shawntabrizi. More commits were seen from 2019 to 2022, which collided with the pre-launch and launch of Polkadot.
4/ Over 4 years of operation, Web3 Foundation Team has given out a total of 476 grants for projects looking to build in the #Web3 space. Among top projects, Astar Network, @_zondax_, Supercolony all received 7 grants.
5/ Beside Web3 Foundation Team Grant Program, teams can submit proposals for the Treasury to have funding to build. By the end of 2022, the Polkadot treasury has paid out 4M+ DOT for ecosystem development effort.
6/ The Kusama Network treasury paid out 467K+ KSM. Top 5 projects awarded the highest valued treasury funds are Bifrost Finance, Acala Network, @encointer, @soramitsu_co & @snowfork_inc.
7/ Staking ratio has also remained fairly stable through the years and oscillated around 50%. Polkadot introduced Nomination Pools in November 2022, an initiative that allows users to stake as low as 1 DOT.
8/ Accounts on Polkadot increased sharply from 2021 to 2022. On October 11, 2022, the total number of Polkadot accounts surpassed the 1M milestone.
9/ By the end of 2022, there are 33 parachains running on Polkadot & 41 on Kusama Network. The auction cost lowered significantly over time, from the highest bid of 35.76M DOT in Moonbeam Announcements auction to as low as 9.9K DOT for the 21st auction slot winner Darwinia.
10/ On the social side, Polkadot Twitter account recorded stellar growth from 2021 onwards and is now sitting at ~1.39M followers. What a rise!
11/ Community expansion is also evident through events & gatherings. From 2019 to 2022, total community events skyrocketed from 15 to 700+ all over the globe Polkadot made its mark with #sub0, @PolkadotDecoded, TOKEN2049 & the fireside chat between Gavin Wood & Snowden.
12/ The first 5 years of Polkadot, Kusama Network & @substrate_io were remarkable — what a milestone to celebrate.
