Rickie Fowler broke his 2-year winning drought yesterday by winning the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale. After a tumultuous final round which included a bizarre triple-bogey seven at the par-4 11th, Rickie managed to birdie 15 and 17 to shoot a 3-over final round 74. And that was all he needed to beat Branden Grace by two.

“It wasn’t fun,” Fowler told Golf Channel after the round. “Other than two holes it was a pretty darn good round of golf. You kind of have to roll with the punches … I’m happy with how we kept moving forward today. Finally we got it done [at this tournament].”

Fowler, who is not known to be a closer, proved everyone wrong yesterday. After his disastrous triple-bogey seven on the 11th, Rickie was able to right the ship and sail smoothly to victory.

All of his efforts, grit, and determination to bounce back showed a final round fortitude we rarely see from Fowler. Maybe that is just what he needs to become not only a 3-round player but a closer as well.

Fowler, a close friend of Tiger Woods, was asked if he had learned anything from Woods on how to play stellar Sunday golf? Rickie stated, “When I’ve talked to him about it, it’s about sticking to the game plan and executing.”

“Just being around Tiger, and playing matches with him, we have fun. He’s made me a better player. It’s a learning situation, even if you’re not asking him about what he thinks about.”

However, besides his ability to win, it is Rickie’s personality and character both on and off the course that leaves fans wanting more. He is the definition of class. To that point, after his win, Rickie stated,

“Trophies are great and this is amazing,” Fowler said. But win or lose, he said, “the sun’s coming up tomorrow.”
