What should I write is a common question that most newbies have. The simple answer is, there are plenty of subjects on which books can be written. But that does not mean you can write on any subject under the sun. Unless you are writing fiction or a fairy tale, you must have some knowledge and clarity about what you are writing. So, choose your subject or topic carefully. Also, think whether you can write 100 to 200 pages on the topic you choose because many topics are only suitable for long articles and not full-length books. Many topics cannot be stretched beyond a few pages or a couple of dozen pages. Also, visit bookstores to see what kind of new books are getting published and what genres are popular. Talk to booksellers to get ideas and suggestions for what readers ask for. What is the latest fad? What genres of books are selling like hotcakes? What subjects do readers find interesting? Then explore writing books on those subjects. For example, some of the popular types of books that help people are, motivational, self-help, inspirational, memoirs, history, cookbooks, biographies, how-to books, textbooks, true stories, scientific books, reference guides, travel guides, manuals, religion, philosophy, spirituality, politics, etc. Such books can be read again and again.

If you prefer fiction and imaginary stuff, then you can write storybooks, fantasy, horror, mystery, thrillers, poetry, drama, adventure, romance, science fiction, or any of their combinations. You can also write books from your own experience or profession. For example, if you have worked in the chemical industry for many years, then you would have gained enormous knowledge that you can pass on to newcomers with your book. You can also keep your eyes and ears open for suggestions from others and conversations that happen around you. You will never know when someone may blurt out a great idea to write a book.

Audience: Every book must be aimed at a specific type or category of readers. That is, you should know who you are writing for to decide on what to write and how much to write. For example, if you plan to write non-fiction always choose subjects that can help people like self-improvement, self-help, leadership, management, humor, workplace issues, technology, life lessons, etc. There is always an eternal need for such books. Next think of an audience and age group for your book like busy executives, novices, CEOs, employees, students, etc., so that your book will help or appeal to those readers.

Ask whether your book topic has a local, national or international audience. For example, if your book solves or tackles a widespread problem, then it will probably sell more because such books have the potential to help thousands or even millions of readers. Always remember your readers are not interested in you. They are only interested in what is written in your book and how it will help them. They are looking for solutions to their problems and are not interested in knowing you or your troubles. Hence, your book should always cater to their expectations. Some common expectations of readers will be in the area of making money, improving their health, improving their career, reducing stress, having fun, gaining some modern knowledge, solving a problem, etc. Your book should tell readers how it can assist them in achieving their objectives.

Writing unique and strange books: It is not always necessary for you to write popular or rehashed editions of books that countless other authors have already written. Toni Morrison, a famous American author, once said, ‘If there is a book that you want to read but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.’ You can use this wonderful advice and explore writing books on unique and strange subjects that no one has written before. It will be really fun and challenging to write a book on a subject that no one has written before. This will also improve your research and patience skills because you will have to hunt for information from many sources to fill the pages if you choose an extraordinary subject for your book.
