Slack to Introduce Stories Feature

The popular team collaboration tool Slack has seen a massive surge in its usage across the world, especially in the time of COVID-19. Now, Slack is set to become the latest tech company to add the stories feature to its communication software this year.

In a recent interview, Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield has stated, “It’s very much like Instagram stories, or Snapchat stories, but in Slack.”

Unlike Instagram, this feature is not about posting short videos of pets, food and vacations. In Slack, stories can help reduce work calls and the seemingly never-ending text chats that often come with work-from-home life. Moreover, cutting down the meeting time and constant video calls is the prime motive of introducing the feature. Butterfield has asked people “Instead of having this 15-minute daily stand-up meeting, can we record the video earlier and get rid of the 15-minute meeting?”. That’s how it will gonna work.

Remote workers can use this feature to create short videos to provide status updates or outlining the day’s agenda for their team.

The company is still considering and working on where exactly the videos of the updates should appear. Right now, there is no set date for the feature’s debut, but Butterfield has mentioned to launch it by the end of 2020.

Another new addition by the company to its platform in this pandemic era is an instant audio feature, i.e. push-to-talk audio, enabling users to have instant audio calls with co-workers within a channel.

Explaining the upcoming feature, Slack CEO says “It will make people feel like they are just talking to their colleagues like they did in office without wasting time”.

The push-to-talk feature is basically meant for generally small teams who are working very closely with each other on a specific problem and need to collaborate very frequently.

It is a fact that these features will give users a lot more flexibility. Both features are still in the prototype phase. With very few months left in 2020, there’s either a hurry to release or this will involve a soft launch or beta period.
