If You Suffer From Insomnia — A HEAVY Blanket May Have You Sleeping Like A Baby
A good night’s sleep COULD be that EASY!
Heavy blankets are, well … heavy.
There are the old fashioned kinds, that are heavy because of the materials they are made from and because they are thick.
There are the new technology kinds that are weighted with a variety of materials of different shapes and sizes, depending on the manufacturer.
I am no newcomer to heavy blankets.
On the farm where my grandparents lived, you needed a heavy blanket to survive the cold winter nights and mornings.
My grandparents farm was among the last in their province to get gas heating installed. Retrofitting an OLD farm house was horrendously expensive. My grandparents were poor and they made due with the wood stove that had served them well for years.
Even after the gas heaters were installed, they turned the heat WAY down at night, because … they were poor, but mostly because they were used to it.
The thick and heavy pure wool quilts my Grandmother made were similar to feather duvets, but WAY heavier because they were stuffed with three inches of wool, instead of light feathers.
I grew up with them and loved them. My Grandmother made them by hand. It would take her a whole winter to clean the wool (the worst and stinkiest job ever) and then card the wool into sheets.
Nest the wool sheets would have to be attached to a muslin backing, and finally the insides were covered with beautiful quilted covers. She could make two of these per year … her winter project.
When I got married, she gave me a special wedding quilt. My husband who grew up in the city and lived with central heating all his life, didn’t say anything negative. He would just crawl out from under the heavy quilt and sleep on top of it. He did make a bit of a fuss during the summer, when it was 80 degrees Fahrenheit and I still climbed under the quilt. When we split up, he seemed quite happy that I insisted on keeping the quilt.
It is interesting to note that pure wool can be very warm and cozy in the winter, and it can actually be “cool” in the summer. You’ve probably never wondered why sheep don’t sweat or faint from overheating during the summer. Now you know and don’t have to wonder!
There are whole lines of Merino wool T-shirts and undershirts that people, including athletes, swear by … and wear year round.
The biggest reaction I had about my heavy blanket was when a friend and I rented a cabin for a month during the summer. I took my blanket with me … my friend laughed and said, “you’ve got to be kidding me.”
Outside the cabin were two sturdy hammocks. We were in heaven. During the day, after long hikes, we’d each retreat to our hammock to read or have an afternoon nap. There were also some fabulous nights (the hammocks had mosquito netting) when we decided to sleep outside.
My friend would nap, read, sleep in her regular clothing. No sheet, no blanket … just a T-shirt and shorts.
Me? No freaking way. I really DID try. I lasted less than an hour … I NEEDED the blanket. Not because I was cold. I just needed … the blanket.
I didn’t understand until years later when I saw a short article in a local newspaper talking about the new “tech” blankets.
I thought it was quite funny … a TECH blanket? But it finally clicked.
HEAVY BLANKETS. That’s what it was all about, all those years. Yes, in winter my quilt was warm and cozy … but in summer I still needed the blankets WEIGHT in order to sleep.
So what’s up with heavy blankets?

I found countless testimonials on Amazon … buyers reporting better, longer, and more relaxing sleep. Alleviation of stress and anxiety was consistently mentioned, as well as alleviation of aches and pains.
Many reviewers went on to purchase weighted blankets for their children with great success stories coming from that.
Most weighted blankets are filled with plastic beads or disks. Some are make with other materials including glass beads. Coverings range from synthetics, including synthetic fur, pure cotton, wool and blends.
When choosing a weighted blanket you get to choose from a variety of sizes and weights. The most common advice is to buy a blanket according to YOUR size vs. bed size and to try a blanket with a weight equivalent to 10% of your body weight. If that’s not heavy enough then return and get a heavier blanket.
Most of the weighted blankets cost in the range between $100 and $200 with some custom made (covering materials) going up from there.
