OnlyFans is a subscription-based platform where creators can post content that users subscribe to for a fee. The platform came into existence four years ago, in a world before Covid-19.

In its inception, OnlyFans was primarily associated with sex workers. It was a platform where dominatrixes, escorts, strippers, porn performers, and cam girls could post racy photos and videos of themselves, behind a paywall. Fans could subscribe to see this exclusive content and send their favorite creators extra tips while also interacting with them through live streams and chatting.

OnlyFans rose up to fill a void that was left when Facebook and Instagram began cracking down on adult content on their platforms. The platform was basically a subscription-based Instagram with no censorship.

And yet, to say that OnlyFans is one-of-a-kind is shortsighted. It’s just another way that sex workers can maximize exposure and capitalize on their sexuality. However, there’s nothing novel about it. Sex workers were already publicizing themselves and connecting with fans for pay on a variety of other platforms before OnlyFans.
