Can you top this one?

We were reminiscing around a table of family and friends. You know how you start with one story and pretty soon everyone has a story to top the previous one? Fish stories. Except all these events really happened.

“Did we ever tell you about the time we went to Greece — for the summer? It was in 2006. A friend offered to babysit our dog, so we packed up our masks and snorkels and drove there.”

My husband hadn’t been able to use up his generous French vacation allotment, and I’d just been laid off after the start-up I worked for folded. A vacation it is!

We left with no reservations and no itinerary in particular except that we thought it would be fun to explore the Peloponnese (the finger-like peninsulas that hang off the continent southwest of Athens).

Everyone goes to the islands. Greece has great islands with beaches that could keep a postcard company in business for the rest of its natural life, but there’s more to Greece than pretty beaches.

The Peloponnese are where all the gods and mythic creatures like Odysseus and the Cyclops hung out.
