What Food Insecurity Really Is, And Why It Matters

Before we start, I’m going to give you a few statements — your job is to read them, formulate your response, and leave it in the comments below.

  • As a society, we have a duty to make sure everyone in our community has enough food — even if that means that we have to make personal sacrifices.
  • If somebody is starving and steals food to feed their family, they should still be thrown in jail like anyone else.
  • It’s not the government’s job to provide food for people.
  • World hunger is not a solvable issue — there isn’t a real solution, so we shouldn’t worry ourselves about it too much.

Alright. I’ll tell you my responses to these statements at the end of this article. For now, let’s move on.

What is food insecurity?

Food insecurity is a lot of different things, but to me, it is the state of having just enough food to eat, but always on the edge of losing that food, and starving.
