PROJECT STATEMENT

I am making an animation for future, college aged designers so that we can instill design ethics into the practice.

OVERVIEW

Audience

My capstone targets the new wave of emerging designers. While the field of design varies (industrial, graphic, fashion, architect), the age range is specific. I believe design ethics are lost within the college education that is taught at design schools across the country. I will be targeting 18 - 26 year old designers.

Content

My capstone is based off of Ruin By Design by Mike Monteiro. My visual language will be modern and playful, contrasting his dry sense of humor but incorporating his banter to make it easy to digest.

Format

Animation made using After Effects. Although it will be animated, it needs to convey a tone of seriousness throughout. I need to determine what the animation will be depicting. Am I animating visual examples of the rules? Animating the typography of the ethics rules?

Style 1: cut paper / collage / lithiograph

Style 2: drawn on iPad, animated keyframes

Need to consider how to convey the message: via voiceover, subtitles or integrated text.

Immediate Outcome

Educate, inform

Intermediate Outcome

Permanently instill design ethics within the new emerging waves of designers who will be entering the work force within 10 years.

INVESTIGATION PLAN

Questions

  • When did designers stop practicing design ethics?
  • Why did designers stop practicing design ethics?
  • Are design ethics being taught in high education?
  • How can designers get back on the right track?
  • What does ‘viral’ really mean and how does it affect our society?
