Mapping out the current landscape of sex education literature. Bonus: Me freaking out because I feel like I don’t have enough work done

I’ve been watching youtube videos on people screen-printing to get a sense of the craft and time required to make something. It is a lot. I am definitely going to have to have my book done at least a month before that final show.

My Business Class

In other news, I will be pitching this book to my entrepreneur class. I have decided it would actually make a lot of sense for me to continue with this idea in that class because I can get a really important thing: feedback from people outside of DAAP.

On top of that, I have to outline a couple of logistical things. I made a matrix of the current market of sex education materials. This helped me understand how I can make this book distinctive and more effective compared to other literature currently out there.

Takeaways from Meeting w/ DAAP Grad

I called Hannah Sellers and asked her about her process making the Blacker the Berry book. There were a couple of key takeaways I got from our talk:

  • Have all content ready to go by the end of this semester
  • Budget a lot of $ for the final printing
  • Consistently print test for legibility
  • When deciding on print size, keep in mind who your user is and when they would use is. (Does it need to be easy to carry? Pocket-sized for traveling? etc.)
  • Creating the grid will probably take the longest amount of time
  • Look into mohawk prints as a resource, they have a good field guide for printing info
  • In order to avoid copyright, include a list of credits in the back of the book

Honing in on Design Inspo

I have been collecting inspiration from the 60’s/70’s and advocates for social justice. (I ❤ you, Corita Kent).

Visual Experiments

Right now I’m beginning to kind of worry because I feel like I don’t know how to actually start making this book. I know I need to dive in but I’m feeling like I don’t have enough research outlined yet. I also feel like I need to finalize copy but I know it doesn’t normally pan out so easily. I need to start making things and then copy editing will come from there. This is hard. I’m putting a lot of pressure on myself and I can feel it.
