In correspondence with my last post, I have created a series of interview questions to prompt individuals to evaluate themselves and their experiences with young adults with AS (if they have had any, to-date). The goal is for them to not only question but to reflect upon these experiences in order to better understand what exactly they could have done to better the situation or what exactly they could have better understood to navigate it.

The Questions |

  1. first, do you know what AS (Asperger’s Syndrome) is and/or how to identify the symptoms of it? if yes, how did you learn about it?
  2. do you personally know someone with AS? if yes, what is your relationship to them?
  3. have you ever encountered someone who you thought displayed symptoms of AS, but that you weren’t certain of? did you know how to respond in conversation?
  4. do you have difficulty speaking or interacting with individuals with AS? if yes, why exactly do you feel that way?
  5. can you think of a specific instance where you were interacting with a person whom you knew to have (or believed to have) AS and felt that their was a miscommunication or misinterpretation?
  6. do you feel comfortable sharing that experience for educational purposes?
  7. further, are you comfortable having the story published on an educational beta website for a senior thesis project (the names will be changed if used in publication and it will not be a live site).
  8. if yes, please share you story to geromeal@mail.uc.edu or get in contact through the above email to set up a time to meet and discuss the experience (if that is your preference).

This is my initial survey idea, as I feel that, for the purpose of sharing interactions, it is best to start with a less invasive approach. It is my goal to have an additional survey put out that specifies the need for interactions with young adults with AS with whom the narrator is not related to.

*for the purpose of this project, young adults are individuals between the ages of 11–24.
