ParcBit (Balearic Park of Technological Innovation), located in Mallorca, is a business park that mainly houses companies from the technological field. It has been in operation since 2002 and was promoted by the Government of the Balearic Islands with the aim of serving as a platform to implement and develop the information society in this community.

The ParcBit has been consolidated with the implementation of companies with high added value in sectors such as software development, consulting, biotechnology and the audiovisual sector. This concentration of companies has led to the creation of sectorial clusters that further enhance these areas.

Both projects have the fundamental basis of creating a point of attraction for innovative talent by building social networks of technology transfer, as well as implementing regional development and adapting it to new business forms.

The ParcBit in figures

Since its official opening and till nowadays, ParcBit has grown in number of established companies, especially over recent years, and has become a fully consolidated technology park. A similar process has taken place in terms of the presence of research centers and technology transfer, key pieces for the articulation of the Park as a vector of R & D & I. As of June 2017, 149 entities have been located, bringing together more than 2,500 highly qualified workers, of which 30 are incubated or at the HUB, 10 are public entities or schools, 10 are business organizations and clusters and 5 correspond to support services.

In addition, we also find research and technology transfer centers such as the Tourism Agency of the Balearic Islands, the Costal Observation and Prediction System (ICTS — SOCIB), the Balearic Institute of Infrastructures and Educational Services (IBISEC) and the Animation and Audiovisual Technologies Unit of the UIB University of the Balearic Islands (LADAT). Likewise, the ParcBit hosts the Baleares.t, TurisTEC, BIOIB and CliQIB clusters. All in all, the companies located in the Park belong above all to the ICT-tourism and computer programming sector.

This growth is also remarkable with respect to some indicators of interest: the number of projects submitted to R & D &I public calls by companies located in the Park has reached 70 since 2009, through the consultancy services that the Park offers them for national and international calls.

With the consolidation of the Park, user services have been increasing as well. Thus, it has a bus line, restaurant and bars, cash machine, nursery and schools, meeting rooms, auditorium, Wi-Fi in common areas, trigeneration energy plant, waste collection and free parking, among others.
