Producers and Consumers — the possibilities are limitless
In most parts of the world, power is very inefficiently distributed. Take for example families with solar power plants that are generating more electricity than they need (especially during week days, when nobody is at home due to school or work.) And then consider most local businesses which need electricity during the weekdays for their computers, lighting and other utilities, but don’t need it in the evenings or over the weekends.
This difference in electricity demand times and prices creates an opportunity for an open energy marketplace, where producers and consumers meet locally and globally to meet each other’s demands for electricity consumption and expulsion (through selling).
At SunContract, we believe that P2P energy trading is the future of the energy market as it is not only environmentally sustainable, but also economically beneficial to our customers and more efficient in terms of distribution. Here are just a few ways in which some of our members are benefiting from SunContract’s P2P energy trading technologies:
An example of individual agreements and the transfer of surpluses to another measuring point.
Ms. Anica, one of our customers on the SunContract platform, lives in a flat in the Primorska region of Slovenia. She joined the platform in September 2018. Ms. Anica pays electricity for two measuring points:
- her apartment and
- her mother’s home
Since joining the platform in its early stages, Ms. Anica made individual agreements for both measuring points with solar power producers that she knows. In the year 2019, the price of electricity - with individual agreements on the marketplace — amounted to about 4–8% lower than the contract price.
Moreover, Ms. Anica’s son dedicates to her a surplus of his production from a self-sustaining solar power plant, so that her overall total cost of electricity in 2019 has basically been only the amount of excise duty and mandatory taxes. A transfer is made simply by entering the email address of the recipient (in this case, Ms. Anica) on the platform and quantity of energy that the user wishes to transfer.
An example of individual agreements and marketplace activities
On the consumer side, SunContract’s platform benefits depend on a number of factors:
- Current market price vs. basic contract price (which varies from consumer to consumer depending on when they joined the platform)
- Source of their electricity (marketplace price, or transfer from loved ones, or an individual agreement with someone that they know)
After April 2019, when the fully functional marketplace went live, one of our business customers from Ljubljana and Mr. Tomaz — a household consumer from the Gorenjska region, both concluded deals on the marketplace and reached up to 5% lower electricity price than their agreed upon basic contractual price.
