Huffing and Puffing over a Hump Year (2017)

If I had to rate the year from 1 (worst year of my life) to 10 (best year of my life), 2017 would be a solid 5… It was a fine year, a mediocre year — basically the ‘Wednesday’ of a year. But instead of hump day, it was a hump year. The whole year was basically Wednesday.

I set out 2017 with a few goals, and were able to accomplish 70% of them. Mediocre grade for a mediocre year. Not bad, but not great. So while I was reflecting on 2017, trying to come up with this post, I started to wonder…Is this mediocrity normal? Is this what ‘adulting’ is? Is life mostly comprised of Wednesdays?

I tried to think back to previous years. I mean, in school, every year can be seen as a milestone, and one step closer to your goal: graduation. But after graduating from university and finding a fulltime job… what’s the next step?

And it dawned on me. This year felt like a hump year because I finally reached the point where the excitement of ‘being a grownup’ has worn off… and the reality that this is my life now has hit, and hit hard. All future milestones will be ones that I set for myself, and the well-paved road of my past has come to an end. We’ve arrived at the Wild Wild West, folks — and it’s every man for themselves.

And I’m sure it’s somewhat normal to struggle a bit — I mean, isn’t that why they call it adulting? You’re not really an adult yet… just in the process of becoming one.

So, to circle back on the original question: Is life mostly comprised of Wednesdays? I hope it’s not mostly comprised of Wednesdays, but I think there will be a few Wednesday years. I think it’s important to recognize that not every year is going to be fan-freaking-tastic (#realitycheck), but keep pushing to get past the hump year and work towards bigger & better things.

Personally, I’m hoping for a ‘Thirsty Thursday’ year, as I officially enter my “late twenties” — time to completely own being in the driver seat (of my life) and hit the road.

Roadtrip, anyone?
