Indonesian 30-Day Language Challenge: Day 4

Day 4’s video is here! I actually recorded this in advance on Day 3 because of anticipated scheduling issues, so this one will be a bit shorter. Translation and commentary below:

Hello everyone, what’s up? I’m Kevin and this video is the fourth in my series for the 30-Day Language Challenge in Indonesian. But actually, this day is still the third day — this means that I’m recording two videos in one day, because I’m not sure that I’ll have time tomorrow to record a new video, and for that reason I thought I should record two videos today, in order to follow our schedule.

Changed the introductory greeting a little (to halo semua), based on some Indonesian Youtube videos I saw today. (Maybe it should have been halo semuanya, now that I think of it.)

Berarti is one way to say “means”, I guess maksudnya would also work.

For the conjunction after “not sure” it might have been better to use apakah (“if”) instead of bahwa (“that”).

I used the wrong “we/our” in “our schedule” — I meant to use kami (which doesn’t include the listener) instead of kita (which includes the listener). Of course, both could have worked depending on the context, but what I was actually trying to say was kami.

And according to our schedule, today, or, uh, tomorrow, I’m supposed to record a video about… I’m supposed to talk about my plans for the coming week, because the coming week is the first full week in this month, from Sunday… or from Monday to… next Sunday. Because of that, according to our schedule, all of us have to think about what we want to do in the area/field (mispronounced) of language learning, in… during this week.

Field/area is bidang, so I got it right the first time and then mis-corrected it to bindang….

For me, I should… uhh… I think what I’m already doing might be enough, or… (???) I’m already reading two books, that I showed [you] previously (see video 1), and besides that, I think that maybe I should look for more content on the Internet to look at and listen to more real content, not from books for students, but videos for, for example, real Indonesian viewers and listeners.

And, up till now, most of the content I’ve been viewing and listening to on the Internet has just been news, which isn’t very… natural. And for that reason, I think I should look for more… let’s say two videos with more real content next week.

“Until now” could be sampai sekarang. I can’t think of a good way to translate “natural” in this context.

By the way — and I probably should have actually said this in the video itself — by “real content” what I have in mind is stuff like game shows, interviews, movies, original content from Indonesian Youtubers, and such. And the news I’m referring to as “not very natural” is specifically news broadcasts with one presenter, which are usually much more formal and don’t have the back-and-forth or normal conversation.

Besides that, I want to finish one of the (text)books I’m currently reading and start reading a new one, which I actually already have on my iPad.

And… okay, this video today will be a little shorter because I’ll be very busy tomorrow and should actually go to sleep already. Ok, thanks for watching my video, and see you tomorrow.
