Ahead of the June primary, the Sunrise Movement’s NYC Hub endorses ten candidates for New York City Council who are committed to a bold Green New Deal for New York City.

NEW YORK, NY — On March 8, 2021, Sunrise Movement NYC announced their first slate of endorsements in the 2021 election cycle. The endorsed slate includes Kristin Richardson Jordan (CD 9), Amanda Farías (CD 18), Tiffany Cabán (CD 22), Jaslin Kaur (CD 23), Aleda Gagarin (CD29), Felicia Singh (CD 32), Sandy Nurse (CD 37), Alexa Avilés (CD 38), and Shahana Hanif (CD 39). They join Elisa Crespo, who Sunrise Movement NYC previously endorsed last month ahead of the March 23rd District 15 special election.

“We are proud to endorse these incredible women for City Council,” said Grace Cuddihy and Judah Klingsberg, Co-Political Leads of the NYC Hub. “Sunrise NYC’s hundreds of youth activists know that winning change takes a grassroots movement, especially in the fight to win a Green New Deal at the scale of the climate crisis. Each of these women have comprehensive plans to bring climate justice to their districts. We will do whatever it takes to send these progressive leaders to the New York City Council.”

“Our movement is proud to receive Sunrise NYC’s endorsement. We commit to care for our common home from the climate chaos that threatens us all,” said Kristin Richardson Jordan, City Council candidate for District 9 in Harlem. “Climate justice is a moral issue. Winning this fight will result in health and economic justice for our neighbors in Central Harlem who are often oppressed through systematic, intentional, unequal exposure to dangerous environments. Now is our time and we are the ones to make NYC green for all.”

“Our climate crisis has become so dire that we need to work at all levels of government in order to ensure that we fight for a sustainable future,” said Amanda Farias, who is running in District 18. “In every borough, communities are realizing the adverse effects of climate change. From the air we breathe to the waste we produce, our policy solutions need to offer an intersectional approach that keeps our climate crisis in focus. I’m proud to have the endorsement of Sunrise NYC and look forward to working with them as a strong partner in our shared mission to provide a habitable city and planet.”

“Sunrise NYC has changed the conversation on what is possible when it comes to fighting the climate crisis here in our City, and I am proud to have their support,” said Tiffany Cabán, candidate for City Council in District 22. “Sunrise Movement knows that climate justice is racial justice, and that is a guiding principle of our campaign in Queens as we work to bring a Green New Deal to NYC.”

“I have put environmental and transportation justice at the core of this campaign, and I am honored to have the support of climate champions who understand the urgency of protecting our environment,” said Jaslin Kaur, candidate in District 23. “Together, we’ll chart a path forward to make climate justice a reality and build a resilient city without the fossil fuel industry.”

“I’m so honored to have the support of the membership of Sunrise NYC for my campaign,” said Aleda Gagarin, candidate in District 29. “Queens can’t wait to take action on climate, and I’m so proud they have recognized our campaign as having the boldest, most comprehensive plan to tackle the climate crisis.”

“I’m thrilled to be part of Sunrise Movement NYC’s City Council slate along with 9 other remarkable women,” said Felicia Singh, candidate in District 32. “Our campaign is committed to addressing the urgent need for climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience in District 32, a coastal district. We must take action together now by teaching, innovating, and creating bold policy today. Education combined with bold economic policies will be a strong vision for climate and environmental resilience. “Sunrise Movement NYC knows that funding a Green New Deal in New York City is a matter of survival for our communities, and I am proud to stand with them in that fight,” said Sandy Nurse, candidate for City Council in District 37. “We have a real shot to implement a Green New Deal for our City in the next Council if we elect a wave of progressive left leaders who are willing to dig in and make it happen.”

“Sunrise NYC has driven home the urgent need for action on climate change,” said Alexa Aviles, candidate in District 38. I am proud to be endorsed by an organization that has mobilized a new generation of organizers who are principled, uncompromising in the face of power, bold and specific in their demands, and optimistic despite the enormity of the challenges we face. I know that together, we will build a resilient city — powered by clean and publicly owned energy, creating thousands of well-paid union jobs in the process.”

“I am proud to have the endorsement of Sunrise Movement NYC! As a Lupus survivor and daughter of immigrants who left their homes in rural Bangladesh because of climate change, this is personal for me,” said Shahana Hanif, candidate in District 39. “We have to create a livable, resilient, and sustainable New York CIty, and I’m excited to work with Sunrise Movement NYC to enact a bold Green New Deal agenda grounded in care and reparative environmental justice.”

“Our city faces an unprecedented challenge in delivering solutions that recognize the impact the climate crisis has on our communities,” said Elisa Crespo, who Sunrise NYC endorsed for her special election in District 15 on March 23. “From access to healthy foods to our fight for breathable air, the climate impacts our ability to provide a level of quality of life that we are not addressing. With Sunrise NYC, I hope to work towards introducing policies that recognize the importance for climate justice and look forward to partnering on behalf of our environment.”

Sunrise NYC is the New York City hub of the Sunrise Movement, a national grassroots movement of young people working to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process. Its hundreds of active members are fighting for a Green New Deal by organizing direct actions, supporting progressive candidates, and more. In 2018, Sunrise NYC proved vital in defeating the IDC in the NY State Senate and in expanding progressive majorities by mobilizing around Alessandra Biaggi, Zellnor Myrie, and Andrew Gounardes. In 2020, 14 out of 16 endorsed candidates were elected into state and federal office.
