Dissecting the ‘Forspoken’ Controversy
Is there a real issue here, or is this a storm in a teacup?
Square Enix’s sparkling new IP, which is set for release next May, has somehow sparked the ire of many game journalists after a closed-door press conference. The remarks made by the hosts included some poorly chosen words to be sure, but these attacks made by the media feel highly unjustified in my view.
From the late days of Final Fantasy XV, it was an open secret that Square Enix’s Luminous Studio (later dubbed Luminous Productions, who were in charge of the game), had already begun work on something entirely different. Something unattached with the company’s flagship franchise that would give players the opportunity to explore an entirely different world.
According to former studio head Hajime Tabata, it was their plan to utilize all of the hard-learned lessons from their work on FF XV (and believe me when I say there were many to be taught!) in order to create a more wholesome experience.
And even though folks knew they were working on a new game, nothing other than a few screenshots here and there had surfaced to the public eye…
