A missed opportunity for a great 3D Metroid

When Metroid: Other M ended Nintendo’s presentation at E3 2009, fans were on the edge of their seats. Outside of 2007’s Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, fans waited for the next 2D Metroid title. What was announced instead was a fully 3D, third-person Metroid adventure with the trailer starting off with a quote familiar to fans.

Anyone who played 2002’s stellar Metroid Fusion remembers this quote from protagonist Samus Aran’s CO, Adam Malkovich. The footage that followed was an intense, action-heavy trailer featuring developer Team Ninja’s logo. Known for creating one of the most stellar 3D action games of its era, Ninja Gaiden, Team Ninja’s quality and prowess would surely help create one of the best Metroid games in history.

Ninja Gaiden received universal critical acclaim upon its 2004 release as well as the 2005 re-release of Ninja Gaiden Black. The title held up as a 3D action title among the likes of Capcom’s Devil May Cry series.
