Video games are magic and anything is possible

Earlier today, Kaze Emanuar, a prominent Mario game modder and ROM hacker, released one of the most amazing video game fan projects I’ve ever seen.

Super Mario 64 Online is exactly what it sounds like. It’s Super Mario 64, but online. Players can choose between Mario, Yoshi, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Wario, Waluigi, and Rosalina, meet up with their friends, and collect some Power Stars in Peach’s Castle. All players share every star anyone in their party collects, so they might choose to split up and divide the work evenly. Alternatively, they might all go to the same level at the same time and impede each other’s work toward their goals. It seems like a fun time.

Given the popularity of Super Mario 64, it’s not hard to imagine Twitch streamers getting really into this. Personally, I’m excited to see what new kinds of interactions this mod will allow players to experience. Even though Emanuar elected to snub my girl Daisy, maybe I’ll boot up Super Mario 64 Online later today. I’ll meet you at the castle.
