Smash Ultimate Tips: Why Solo-Maining Might Be Hurting Your Growth
The dangers of solo-maining on Smash Ultimate and why you should use secondary characters for counterpicking
Everyone has a favorite character. The character you want standing tall through every match. The truth is your favorite won’t always be the victor. There will be a fight where their movement is crippled, their landings decimated, and unable to make a winning dent.
However, in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, benching your favorite is seldom the case.
While Ultimate’s roster features several characters with a few unfavorable matchups, in no way are fighters at a complete disadvantage by another fighter as seen in previous Smash titles.
Unlike Smash 4, in which most players largely specialized in a single character, Smash Ultimate is a counterpick-heavy game. Notice the stark contrast of counterpick use in the latter. As with any Smash title or fighting game, you are less likely to rely on other characters if you’re picking from the top tier due to a better matchup spread.
