The Games That Grew Up With Me

Looking back on the games that I grew up with and the joy they brought to me

As the pandemic begins to reach its end, video games have proven to be the go-to method of killing time. Video games weren’t always the popular approach. Remember hearing people or even your parents point out that you’re wasting your life away playing games?

It’s had me reflecting on video games not only being a source of comfort now but while growing up. I still remember getting picked up from school and eagerly turning on my Gameboy, Pokémon Yellow cueing up. This was a time before Let’s Plays and you had to buy hard copy game guides from the store.

I even remember watching game walkthroughs on a VHS tape called ‘Game-Players Game Tape Vol. 1” with no intention of getting the game, but just to watch the gameplay! As a kid, I couldn’t afford the newest game that hit the shelves, so these game walkthroughs were a big part of my early gaming experience and Teddy Ruxpins. For those who are not sure who or what is Teddy Ruxpin, it was a bear that would allow specific VHS tapes to be played out loud through the bear.
