Why Did Resident Evil, Not Mega Man, Become Capcom’s Hallmark Franchise?

Over the past few years, Capcom’s Resident Evil series has seen a resurgence in popularity and quality. After the failure of Resident Evil 6 in 2012, Capcom’s Resident Evil 7 brought the survival-horror series giant back into form. Featuring two remakes from the 90s — Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 — as well as the recent Resident Evil Village, the gaming giant has released four major titles over the past five years. Resident Evil is synonymous with Capcom, survival horror games, and perhaps the gaming industry in general.

But why Resident Evil? Why is Capcom’s big-budget horror adventure their modus operandi now? There’s no question that Resident Evil has seen stellar success propelled forward from 2005 with the excellent Resident Evil 4. But unlike Nintendo with Super Mario, Capcom’s major series became Resident Evil and not their mascot series from the 80s, Mega Man.
