Atlus’ Persona 5 was released in the west in 2017. It won “Best RPG” at that year’s Game Awards show, and the game’s protagonist, Joker was unveiled as a character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Thus the title broke free of its niche roots and became a cultural phenomenon among gaming fans taking note of the series for the first time.

Along with Fire Emblem, Tales, Ys, and others, Persona 5 helped make the Japanese RPG genre known to a wider audience over the course of the last decade. As per series tradition — along with Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 Golden — the 5th entry in the series followed up with an even bigger and better re-release: Persona 5 Royal in 2020.

Now keep in mind that Persona 5 is already five years old. Also, note the span of years between Persona 3 and Persona 4 (’06–’08) and the span between Persona 4 and Persona 5 (’08 — ‘17). It goes without saying that transitioning to a new system, using a new engine, and writing the extreme amount of dialogue that was included in Persona 5 warranted nearly a decade of work.
