Will Spider-Man Appear in Marvel’s Avengers?

Let’s explore the possibilities

After an initial delay of Marvel’s Avengers, Square Enix has announced that the game will release on September 4, 2020. The game is intended to launch on current and next-generation consoles. Many details of the game were shown in the E3 2019 reveal trailer, but much more information has been released since then. For example, some of the story and the gameplay has been provided to the public.

Marvel’s Avengers takes place approximately five years after “Avengers day” in which many people died. Because the Avengers were blamed for this tragedy, the team had to reassemble to help save the world from chaos. In many trailers and official statements released, Spider-Man is not shown/mentioned at all. Based on the information we already have, we can only make predictions due to the hints and interviews with the game developers.

Marvel’s Spider-Man was a PS4 exclusive developed by Insomniac Games. Marvel’s Avengers, on the other hand, is available on all gaming platforms and was developed by Square Enix. Because of these reasons, a crossover is the only way the same Spider-Man you played as on the PS4 will be able to be played in Marvel’s Avengers. Therefore, this makes the chances low, but there is still a possibility considering the gaming community has requested it countless times. After seeing gameplay footage of Thor, you can see a reporter holding a microphone with “The Daily Bugle”, the newspaper in the Spider-Man comics. This is a small hint towards a future Spider-Man implementation and/or an interconnected universe where Peter Parker (or Miles Morales) and the Avengers exist.

Another hint of an interconnected universe that has been visible to the public for over a year now is that there is an Avengers tower that you can see in Spider-Man PS4. It is noted as a landmark within the game, and you need to snap a picture of it to complete the landmark objectives in that specific borough. There has been no talk of an Avenger’s game made by Insomniac Games, so it is quite probable that there could be a link between the two worlds.

Similar to how there were three different actors for the role of Spider-Man in the movies due to ownership of the superhero by Sony and Marvel, it can only be assumed that a different version of Spider-Man is possible to be played in a future DLC or update for Marvel’s Avengers. Square Enix’s own creation of Spider-Man is more probable than a crossover. A new voice actor, character model, and suit must be made to avoid lawsuits from Insomniac Games.

When Spider-Man: Miles Morales for the PS5 releases, more information will be released regarding the possible crossovers of Spider-Man. More easter eggs and hints will be shown within both of the upcoming games because there has already been an easter egg in a Thor gameplay trailer. If an Avengers Civil War plot exists at all — Spider-Man will be in the game if Square Enix decides to take the story from the Marvel movie. However, there have been no ties to the Marvel cinematic universe and the game universe yet, as the game decides to offer a unique story taken partially from the comics.
