Here’s what you missed in the AR+VR space for April 2018

Numbers

  • IDC expects AR and VR headsets to grow dramatically. It’s latest predictions suggest that 2018 will see sales hit 12.4 million units, up from 8 million in 2017. And VR and AR headset sales are expected to jump an average of 50% annually over the next five years, hitting 68.9 million in 2022.
  • Sensor Tower estimates that over 13 million apps built with ARKit have been downloaded since the AR platform’s launch in September. Not surprisingly, nearly half of these downloads were for AR-enabled games.
  • CCS Insights forecasts 22 million virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) headsets and glasses will be sold in 2018, with fivefold growth to 121 million units in 2022
  • Location-based entertainment (LBE) is expected to help take VR mainstream and according to a new report from FutureSource the LBE VR space is predicted to surpass $800 Million in revenue by 2022.
  • ABI Research’s latest report finds that VR in retail and marketing will generate $1.8 Billion in 2022
  • ABI Research estimates that global smartglasses for use in the automotive industry will hit 1.7 million in 2022, and the total automotive AR market is expected to grow at CAGR of 177% to reach $5.5 billion by 2022
  • AR/VR market transition begins as startups raise record $3.6 billion in the past 12 months according to Digi-Capital (Venturebeat)
