Bollywood Art Project (BAP) Murals Brought to Life

Mumbai. The City of Dreams. The abode of Bollywood. The crossroads of reality.

Also, the canvas of urban street painting proprietor, Bollywood Art Project (BAP).

The tinsel town has been painted with wall murals of the Hindi film industry’s icons — from Big B to Irrfan Khan. Be it a nondescript building in Bandra or a random wall in Powai, the entire city is now coloured with classic instances of Indian cinema.

Collaborating with BAP, Superfan Studio took it up a few notches. We literally brought these larger-than-life figures into life, with a whole lot of augmented reality and zest for the silver screen.

Partnered with Snapchat, Superfan Studio has evoked 7 lenses for 7 murals at 7 locations.

Find links to location and Snapchat below each picture.

Madhubala — Location and Snaplink
Sridevi — Location and Snaplink
Irrfan Khan — Location and Snaplink
Dilip Kumar — Location and Snaplink
Anarkali — Location and Snaplink
Dil Chahta Hai — Location and Snaplink
Amitabh Bachchan — Location and Snaplink

On scanning the Snapcodes superimposed on the expansive murals using phones, the frozen paintings erupt with animation, psychedelic effects, music, texts, dialogues and of course, nostalgia.

Like the times of the bioscope.

But wait!

What about the fly in the ointment — COVID — and social distancing? Wouldn’t that put a pause in the plan to visit these places?

Well, this resurrection from pictures using AR is not limited to those particular landmarks. You can see your favourite B’Town stars come to life from even your home!

Get immersed, immediately.

All you need is an external medium that displays the images. Upon scanning via Snapchat, the charm begins.

Just a few taps and you shall be transported to the golden era of Bollywood!

The Guide:-

  1. Open Snapchat on your phone.
  2. Point the secondary camera at any of the 7 images.
  3. Tap and hold for a few seconds/ Click on ‘Scan’
  4. Presto!
  5. Watch, listen, hum, capture, record; get transported back in time.

It is obvious that you would need another phone if you want to scan these murals here (computer/tablet/phone screen).

As a different option, you’re free to fire the search engine for the images — for e.g., Bollywood Art Project Madhubala or bollywood art project dil chahta hai, preferably on a big screen.

Your Snapchat-enabled device can scan this or a printed image of the same.

And then,

  1. Click on any Mural Name in the grid (for e.g. Sridevi). It’ll directly take you to the lens’s Snapchat page.
  2. Follow the guide: Steps 2 and 3.

(Quick alternative: To see miniature magic, point your Snapchat camera at the Snapcode)

If you want to look them up on Snapchat or share, click on Search: Type *any Mural Name* <SPACE> BAP.

To enjoy the effect, again follow Step 2 and Step 3.

Once this pandemic subsides, tourism is going to get into an overdrive. With this unique merger between art and technology, the sector is bound to see new horizons. City walks, anyone?

On the other hand, augmented reality will reach a broader audience spectrum, making it more mainstream. Be it a film fanatic or a cabbie, everyone gets a taste of the vintage-on-the-virtual.
