5 Ways to Make the Most of the Playground this Winter

Playground tips to facilitate fun and safety!

--

Even during this cold winter season, it’s possible — and even beneficial — for children to get some daily exercise by playing on the playground. With some proper planning and easy maintenance, you can create a safe play area this winter.

Easy Playground Maintenance Tips for Winter

  1. Clear standing water.
Puddles of water can become hazardous if it freezes. Keep an eye out for ice or snow puddles and be sure to shovel it.
  2. Keep play equipment dry.
Help prevent slips on playground stairs, climbers, decks, and other standing surfaces by making sure they’re free of water or ice.
  3. Consider non-slip mats at doorways.
If your playground is located near a building (such as a school or church playground), consider putting non-slip mats at doorways to prevent children and adults from slipping as they enter and exit the building.
  4. Clear snow around equipment with fall heights.
Snow is not considered a play surface and should be removed around any play equipment with fall heights.
  5. Be watchful of clothing drawstrings.
Drawstrings from large bulky winter jackets and scarves could be strangulation hazards. Ensure children are wearing clothing appropriately and safely.
