Resolution Run | Start 2018 on the right foot with the family-friendly Resolution Run in Atlanta on January 1. Distance options include a 50m dash, one mile, and 5K.

Children’s Museum of Atlanta
Visit this children’s museum in Atlanta for free on the 2nd Tuesday this month (January 9). Bring the kids there between 1:00–6:00 p.m., but expect some long lines.

VIRGINIA

Ice Skating | Stony Point Fashion Park is hosting an ice skating rink now until January 15.

Maymont | The Maymont estate is a great place for an afternoon walk in the park. Enjoy the Italian garden, Japanese garden, outdoor animals, nature center, and more! Maymont is free and open daily.

CALIFORNIA

Hot Chocolate 15K/5K | This race is fun, family-friendly, and involves delicious hot chocolate! It takes place January 7 at the Golden Gate Park Music Concourse in San Francisco.

San Francisco Botanical Garden | Visit the 100-year-old Monterey Cypress and other beautiful plants at the San Francisco Botanical Garden this month. Take advantage of free admission on New Years Day and January 9 and every day from 7:30–9:00 a.m.

COLORADO

Loveland Sports Park Playground | Visit this farming-inspired playground at Loveland Sports Park this month. It features fun play equipment for children of all ages!

Joy for Toys Pop Up Museum | Lakewood Cultural Arts Center is hosting this limited-time museum dedicated to showcasing toys throughout the decades. This exhibit ends January 7.

ILLINOIS

Winter Wonder Fest | Don’t miss the last week of this winter festival at the Navy Pier in Chicago. The last day of the festival is January 7.

Brookfield Zoo | Bring the family to the Brookfield Zoo on MLK Day and enjoy free admission and live musical performances.

MICHIGAN

Plymouth Ice Festival | The whole family will enjoy the grand ice sculptures at the Plymouth Ice Festival in downtown Plymouth. This free festival takes place January 12–14 and the sculptures will remain standing after the festival if the weather permits.

Fire and Ice Festival | From January 20–22, visit downtown Rochester for the free Fire and Ice Festival. There will be a climbing tower, sports inflatables, games, food, and more!

MASSACHUSETTS

Ice Sculptures at Faneuil Hall Marketplace | Start the new year with the family by enjoying ice sculptures, live performances, and more at Faneuil Hall Marketpalce in Boston on January 1.

Harvard Square Chocolate Festival | Bring the family to this free chocolate tasting event on January 28 on Brattle Plaza in Cambridge.

NEW YORK

Wave Hill | Go on a walk through this public garden in New York with the family this month. Pro tip: if you go on Tuesdays or Saturdays between 9 a.m. — noon, admission is free!

Holiday Train Show | Enjoy the last weeks of the Holiday Train Show before it ends on January 15. This exhibition showcases model trains as they ride through re-created New York City landmarks.

WASHINGTON

Children’s International Film Festival | Don’t miss the Children’s International Film Festival in Seattle this month. Starts January 25 and runs through February 10.

Polar Bear Plunge | Take part in this Seattle tradition of jumping into the Puget Sound in January 1. This event is free and takes place at the Point Defiance boat launch in Point Defiance Park. Enjoy heating tents, hot drinks, and snacks after the plunge.
